Welcome to First Baptist Church of Pendleton!
a welcoming and affirming community of grace for all people
Rooted in Faith and Growing in Love

October 23, 2022 · 10:45 am · Twentieth Sunday after Pentecost

This week, Jesus’ parable introduces us to the not-so-humble but perhaps familiar prayer: “Thank God I am not ________.” However we fill in that blank, we may be surprised to find Jesus there. Disciples of Jesus are not supposed to be an exclusive club from which we judge outsiders. Rather, Jesus is on the outside with those who have been excluded. This parable (Luke 18:9-14) invites us to examine with honesty and humility our relationship with God and neighbor. We are reminded that disciples don’t judge. Rather, God’s mercy is for all of us.

We gather as a welcoming and affirming community of grace, striving to welcome ALL people. Rooted in faith and growing in love, all are welcome and wanted, just as God made you.

The Call to Worship will be “My Song Is Love Unknown.” The Sanctuary Choir will lead the Choral Call to Worship of “Humble Thyself in the Sight of the Lord.” The Song of Praise will be a medley of “Broken Vessels (Amazing Grace)” and “Grace Greater Than Our Sin.” Lesa Chandler will read Luke 18:9-14 and will give the Offertory Prayer. The Sanctuary Choir will sing the anthem “Grace to You.” Rev. Jennifer McClung Rygg will preach the sermon “Thank God I’m Not ________.” The Hymn of Response will be “Share His Love.”
