Welcome to First Baptist Church of Pendleton!

January 7, 2024 · 10:45 am · First Sunday after Epiphany ∙ Baptism of the Lord

On the first Sunday of 2024, we conclude our Advent and Christmas worship series, How does a weary world rejoice? In Luke’s story of Jesus’ baptism (Luke 3:21-22) we are reminded to trust our belovedness. We will also hear the story of the Magi (Matthew 2:1-12) and receive the gift of Star Words. Star Words, also called Star Gifts, are an Epiphany tradition in which each person receives a word that is meant to guide them toward Christ, much like the Magi were guided by a star. Star words are not chosen but received, like a gift. Today’s service will include the opportunity to receive a Star Word.

The Call to Worship will be “Brightest and Best of the Stars of the Morning.” The Song of Praise will be “Shine, Jesus, Shine.” Kim Burgess will read Matthew 2:1-12. The Offertory Hymn will be “Fairest Lord Jesus.” Kim Burgess will give the Offertory Prayer. Richard Reynolds Huss will play “What Star Is This, With Beams So Bright?” for the Offertory. The Sanctuary Choir will sing “Cornerstone” with “The Solid Rock.” Rev. Jennifer McClung Rygg will preach the sermon “The Joy of Belonging.” We will have an opportunity to receive the gift of Star Words. The Hymn of Response will be “We Three Kings.”
