On Pentecost, we celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit — God’s presence and power poured out on ALL believers. Pentecost is often considered the birthday of the church. The church (universal) was born when the Holy Spirit came into the midst of the assembled worshipers and shook things up! Birth can be painful, messy, and life-changing — much like life. Just as the birth of the church was met by skeptics and doubters, so is the church today. And sometimes, the church critics have a point. Sadly, churches are sometimes more concerned with their own power than with the power of the Holy Spirit. Pentecost reminds us that the Holy Spirit is not controlled by our religious structures, but breaks in like a mighty wind and like fire. One of the traditions of Pentecost is to wear red, the color of fire. So on Sunday, June 5, wear red to worship as we give thanks for the powerful gift of the Holy Spirit! One of the gifts of the church is community — people with whom we can pray, play, eat, grow, laugh, grieve, and celebrate. Join our church family for a picnic at Twin Lakes at 4 pm on Pentecost Sunday, June 5.
