To go or not to go was the question. The rain did not stop the Senior Adult Ministry from venturing out on our first field trip since before COVID restrictions were made! Our first stop was the Clemson Area African American Museum. The CAAAM is located in the formerly segregated Calhoun Colored School and is the only African American museum in Pickens County. It is the City of Clemson’s premier organization dedicated to telling stories rooted in people, places, and traditions. The docents were very welcoming to our group as they guided us through the museum. A detailed history was given for each display. We viewed a collection of framed photographs by Cecil Williams of Orangeburg, SC.

Before the age of 12, Cecil’s camera had captured the petitioners in Clarendon County as they lit the torch of freedom. Cecil Williams is now the Director of Historic Preservation at Claflin University. His photographs are a priceless collection of historical events in the CAAAM.

A replica of a classroom including a pot belly stove reminded us of school life in the 1950s.

The museum is continuing to expand with various future projects.

After touring the museum we headed to our second stop, the Cracker Barrel in Anderson, and enjoyed lunch in a warm, cozy, and very friendly atmosphere.

On our return trip we were nearing the church when several cell phones started making the sound of receiving weather alerts! All our members were home safely before Hurricane Helene arrived. Remember the question of to go or not to go was considered. We chose to go and we are so very grateful for the information we received and so thankful for the opportunity to enjoy good food and great fellowship. Once again we are reminded of the generosity of our membership, FBCP, and CBFSC.

Our Senior Adult Ministry volunteers are planning several events this week for FBCP and our Pendleton community to enjoy. We are serving the Wednesday night supper and preparing for our Fall Carnival meeting Thursday morning. Our volunteers do not necessarily have the time but our volunteers have the heart for this ministry. Thank you, volunteers!

— Jane Huss, Lead Volunteer

Senior Adult Ministry meets the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month and is open to anyone in the community. Volunteers from the community are also welcome. Jane Reynolds Huss is the lead volunteer. Contact the church office to get a message to Jane.

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing. 1 Thessalonians 5:11
