Welcome to First Baptist Church of Pendleton!
a welcoming and affirming community of grace for all people
Rooted in Faith and Growing in Love

December 18, 2022 · 10:45 am · Fourth Sunday of Advent

Today we continue our Advent theme, A Geography of Advent. The Scriptures that help us prepare for the birth of Jesus are filled with places – holy places, hard places, and pathways in between. Together, these places present “a geography of Advent” – a map of the heights and depths our good God will go to come near to us. We can meet God on the mountaintop, but God also draws near to wherever it is we find ourselves.

We gather as a welcoming and affirming community of grace, striving to welcome ALL people. Rooted in faith and growing in love, all are welcome and wanted, just as God made you.

The Advent Hymn will be “Light the Fire, the Fire of Life.” The FBCP Youth Group will light the Advent Candle of Love. Joseph Reed will sing “Wood of the Cradle.” Thomas Rygg and Rev. Jennifer Rygg will read Matthew 1:18-25. The Children and Youth Handbell Choir will play “Jingle Bells,” “The First Noel,” and “Joy to the World.” The Offertory Hymn will be “O Come, All Ye Faithful.” Rev. Chris Cottingham and Richard Reynolds Huss will play the piano/organ duet medley of “O Come, O Come Emanuel” and “Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus.” Suzanne Morse will read Isaiah 9:2-7. The Sanctuary Choir will present two choral anthems: “A Light Shall Shine,” featuring Beth Brewer as soloist, and “Nativity Carol,” featuring Anna Leavitt and Joseph Reed as soloists. Ted Thomas will read 1 John 4:7-12. The Sanctuary Choir will sing “The First Noel/Pachelbel’s Canon” and “Silent the Night” (with “Coventry Carol” and “Silent Night.”) The Carol of Love will be “What Child Is This.”
