Rooted in Faith and Growing in Love

October 16, 2022 · 10:45 am · Nineteenth Sunday after Pentecost ∙ Week of Prayer for CBF Global Missions

This week, we continue our series on What Disciples Do with the story of Jacob wrestling with and demanding a blessing from God in Genesis 32. We also begin the Week of Prayer for CBF Global Missions. This year, one of CBF’s featured missionaries is Rick Burnette, for whom we have been an Encourager Church since 2020. Rick’s work in South Florida focuses on the challenge of food insecurity among migrant farmworkers. In both the story of Jacob and in the work of gardening and sharing food resources we find the theme of persistence. In the “Holy Wrestling Match” of life, faith, and discipleship, we encounter God in surprising and powerful ways.

The Instrumental Call to Worship will be “I Will Change Your Name” and the Vocal Call to Worship will be “Honestly.” The Hymn of Praise will be “Shout to the Lord.” Dave Alverson will read Genesis 32:22-31 and give the Offertory Prayer. The Sanctuary Choir will sing the anthem “Beside the Still Waters.” Rev. Jennifer McClung Rygg will preach the sermon “Holy Wrestling Match.” The Hymn of Response will be “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus.”
